The Hackney Summer Uni – Needs Facilitators/Artiste/Organisations!
HYPU Summer Uni – 25 July – 12 August 2011
We are now starting to plan for the above programme, and would like to ask if you would be willing to support our charity by giving up your valuable time to run a course or workshops on a voluntary basis.
Funding for programmes and projects such as ours is becoming extremely difficult to obtain, over the past year and half, HYPU has had severe financial difficulties, which has resulted in us having to cancel many of the programmes that we hold. We are 100% reliant on fundraising as our only source of income as we are not supported by our local authority or any other government agency despite numerous requests for financial support. Due to the economic downturn many of the funders that support organisations like ours have been reluctant to give and for this reason resulted in us having to cancel many of our programmes. Our situation has become so severe that out of the four programmes we hold annually we have unfortunately only been able to hold one of our programmes during 2010.
As you are well aware The Summer University is a vital part of HYPU’s work, to our greater disappointment, for the first time in our 13 year history we were forced to cancel our 2010 summer programme, which is the biggest and most important of all the programmes we hold. Hackney has a culture of gang violence and youth murders. Police recorded 182 firearm offences between March 2009 and 2010, compared to 141 the year before – putting the borough among the worst in the capital for gun crime, however between all of this turmoil and disaffection, Hackney has some extremely talented young people. – Who were extremely disappointed that there was no summer uni for them and no other alternative in the holiday provision for them to attend.
Therefore we have come to the conclusion that the only way that we can have a summer 2011 programme is to ask that our tutors, organisations, and partners run a workshop or course on a voluntary basis. If you would like to run a session but are unable to give up 15hrs or 10hrs, a week we can be flexible as to how we timetable your course. e.g. two mornings or a one day workshop could be a possibility.
We recognise that this is a lot to ask and if you feel that you are unable to contribute your time we will fully understand. We would be grateful if you could give us an indication if you would like to run a workshop or course for the summer no later than the 28 February 2011.
Yours sincerely

SAVE THE ACLT CHARITY – THE COMMUNITY MUST DO IT’S BIT!!
THE ACLT CHARITY IS IN CRISIS

It is with regret that we have to put up this post, but maybe at the same time this is a good wake up call for the London African-Caribbean community who in my opinion need to regain consciousness, stand-up on their own two feet and come together collectively to support a much-needed organisation like the ACLT – who has carried out some great work in our community. As of the beginning of 2011 they are no longer supported by local government funding due to cuts by the new so-called Con-dem government, and this has devastated their organisation.
Below is a message from the ACLT – THEY NEED YOUR SUPPORT RIGHT NOW!
Thank you to our supporters and dedicated volunteers for their tremendous help and efforts with various fundraising activities over the last year. Like many of you, 2010 was an extremely tough year for us as funding dwindled dramatically despite the hard work to boost income in innovative ways.
Our income comes from small public donations and proactive or reactive fundraising. Therefore we are left in a vulnerable position when charity giving falls. Contrary to public opinion there is a sustained and significant lack of long term investment in our work to support patients and donor recruitment in minority ethnic communities. Ultimately, our closure will put many more lives in serious jeopardy. On their behalf, we must all rise to the challenge and galvanise everyone to take immediate action.
Save the ACLT Charity Appeal

SOS! After our crisis discussions, on 6 January 2011 we launched an urgent charity crisis appeal to raise £80K. We started by emailing all ACLT Volunteers and key media & entertainment contacts to come together and build a strategy. We are encouraged by your initial responses and efforts to kick-start the campaign. This is evolving rapidly as our ‘Crisis’ team develops various ideas and recommendations.
Fight for survival Many are shocked and dismayed at what could happen to patients and their families if the charity folded. Encouragingly, many have already pledged their commitment to stop our closure in March…and beyond.
A promising start. We would like to thank our volunteers and supporters who have donated funds and ideas and have helped spread the word. In the first week, you helped us raise over £7K – that’s about £1K a day! January is a difficult month and donations have slowed down, so we need each and every one of you to help as we have under 70 days left to reach the minimum £80K.
ACLT needs you!
Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, ACLT Co-Founders send an urgent plea to all ACLT supporters to take action for any financial assistance and support you can give.
