Seasons Greetings – Free Personal Development Gift & 2011

Happy New Year Pictures, Images and Photos

Greetings My Dear Friends, Subscribers & Supporters
,
Merry Xmas and Happy Kwaanza to you all – May you be blessed and gain every bit of success and happiness you can find in 2011.

I first would like to really say Thank You for all the support we received this year, it was another trying year just trying to make a living in the UK film industry, and without your support we wouldn’t have been able to keep doing what we do best – creating a unique platform for black filmmakers and providing you with an alternative way of relaxing and watching the best International black films.

I would also like to apologies for the frustrated comments I made in my last email to our database. This was when a new email system we were trying out somehow became infected with a virus. When people started to complain about getting numerous emails created by the virus, I made comments about taking this as an opportunity to clean up some of the “deadwood” on my database. Yes I had planned to clean up our database (as all good businesses should do; every 3 years or so), because the true fact was, there were quite a few people on our database that appeared to not be too interested in our events and no longer came out or supported our work. Through a number of other things and then the virus attack, I got a bit frustrated and my cheeky side (or as some would say facety-side) came out, and people who know me, know I can be a bit straightforward and direct to the point sometimes. Which I can say hasn’t always harmed me – I know from past feedback a lot of people even appreciate me been straightforward and honest with my thoughts, but I also understand there are those that don’t appreciate it.

In a way I will always speak my mind – but I do understand we are all different and some will take offence to certain comments and more so especially in how they are said – So Please Accept My Personal Apology! (Feel free to send me back any comments – info@kushfilms.com)

What’s Next – 2011 & Beyond
In the context of everyday life in the UK, I suppose things were not great for a lot of people in 2010. The one thing I have learnt this year is, what really matters is my own personal happiness, and for me to truly be happy, I have learnt that I only have to banish all surrounding negativity, imagined fears and have unwavering belief in myself and the opportunities abound to me. Then I turn my mind towards been grateful for life as it is and been happy and “hey presto” happiness manifests.

I have learnt to not let exterior forces like: elements in the bias UK film industry, money, bills, friends, family and the Cam-Clegg (“Con-dem”) government influence how I feel, move or react to everyday life – in the past things used to be different and I would let things like these influence my thought patterns and dictate how I felt & moved – not anymore!

I have fully grasped the fact: I AM THE MASTER OF MY OWN DESTINY & SO ARE YOU!

It’s all about the mindset, learning to understand the mind, eradicating negative beliefs and manipulating your thoughts should be everyone’s clear daily objective; for only then, will you truly have control over your own happiness and ultimate destiny.

So in 2011 my focus shall not be on screening films on a regular basis anymore!

I do still intend to work in the global film industry but on a whole new level, its time to step-up once again and take up the mantle of leading the way for others to follow especially in the field of film distribution, which is where the real control & power of the film industry is based. Plus as many of you already know I want to travel – meet new people and reach out to a much more global audience. If I can spend 5-7 months out of the UK each year, I will be very happy.

If I can find the right people to takeover and run the film club – then we can look at continuing regular monthly film screenings so long as it’s viable and making a profit!

I have done my full apprenticeship as an Exhibition, Marketing & PR specialist – Its now time to fulfil my long-term ambitions & goals and one of those is to be an International Film Distributor & Producer, with an emphasis on International and be totally in control of own destiny – Unlike other newly started film clubs, Kush will no longer will be at all reliant on UK distributors bringing quality black films to the UK (not that I have been anyway reliant on them over the last 2 years – we have sourced our own quality black films).

MY OWN PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Over the last 2 years I have also delved into the field of Personal Development, which includes Mind-Development, Wealth Creation, Universal Well-Being & Abundance. Then over the last year I finally realised that I have a great desire for everything involved with Personal Development and it was my gateway to fulfilment, happiness, success and the opportunity to help others globally as I have always wanted to do – hence the creation of Kush right from the beginning.

I now intend to fully take hold of everything I want to truly do in life (the things that make me happy) and explore life to the full. So even though I love to promote & show films and support black filmmakers, in life I never want to stand still (not expand, grow, explore, develop etc). I have now reached that stage in life where I want and need new challenges and I now realise there are so much more other things in life I want to do, especially around helping others, those that really need and want help (i.e. struggling disadvantaged people both young & old in Europe, Africa and other places around the world). To be honest I have lost patience and faith with life here in the UK and the plight of my own people – that’s enough said on that matter!

In the New- Year where, I will be re-launching a newly designed Kush online store retailing as previous DVD films along with new CD’s and Personal Development products.

YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
I will also be looking to help you (if you’re interested) in all matters pertaining to Personal Development including: Mind-Development, Wealth Creation, Financial Freedom & Spiritual Well-being.

I will be launching my new personal development site www.marlonpalmer.com & www.mindwealthdevelopment.com in the New-Year where you will be able to Buy Products, Read & Submit Testimonies, Download Personal Growth Items (like E-Books & MP3 recordings), Buy Internet Income Streams Products, Select and Purchase Life Success Coaching Courses, Watch Motivational Video’s and gain Universal Knowledge from some of the great Personal Development guru’s across the globe.

Some of the speakers, authors and coaches I will feature is: Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale, Bob Procter, Brian Tracy, John Assaraf, Anthony Robbins, Joe McClendon, Les Brown, Wayne Dyer, Joe Vitale, Deepak Chopra, Dr. John DeMartini, Jack Canfield, Dr Maxwell Maltz & Dan Kennedy, Dr, Rev Michael Beckwith, Dr Robert Anthony, Barefoot Doctor, Aine Belton and many others.

From studying personal development techniques over the last 2 years I have realised that for you to truly succeed in changing your life, you first and foremost NEED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND!

If you are finding aspects of life difficult – then remember it was your mind that created the environment you are in and it’s your mind that can change life for you completely!

Whatever is happening in your life you have to take full responsibility for it – own it and then you will be able to start dealing with it – ignore it and it will grow and fester into all aspects of your life!

A lot of people make the mistake of trying to change undesirable things in their life, make lots of money, get better health etc, but they attempt to do this by quick-fixes like spending money to purchase products that purport to teach you how to gain these things – without realising that FIRST & FOREMOST FOR YOU TO CHANGE – YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR THOUGHT PATTERNS, WHICH INCLUDES LIFE-TIME HABITS & NEGATIVE BELIEFS! (Which many don’t even realise are there, blocking your chance of success).

In my case been African-Caribbean I grew hearing in the house things like: “You can’t have any money because money is hard to come by and doesn’t grow on tree’s”.

“Money is the root of all evil”

“You must go to school, get a good education and work hard for money!”

A lot of us don’t realise how a lot of these things we heard as we grew up have now developed our sub-conscious minds and are part of our underlying belief system – inhibiting you from finding true happiness and success without you even fully realising it.

That’s also why sometimes when you decide to try something new to change things for the better, after a while you give up and revert back to type – this is your sub-conscious belief system reminding you of what you actually believe you can achieve and then creating numerous ready-made excuses to stop you from realising these new goals. You sub-conscious beliefs have been created and built up since you were 5 years old, how do you expect to just all of a sudden start believing you can do this and that without changing how you sub-conscious mind thinks and reacts. You Sub-conscious mind control’s the majority of your behaviour; it helps you to do things without even thinking about it!

Therefore a lot of us live in perpetual PROCRASTINATION and go to our grave’s wishing we had done this or that in life and having regrets.

As Albert Einstein said “You Cannot Solve A Problem With The Same Mind That Created It”.

If I can help you in anyway or if you would like to make comment on anything I have stated or you would like to discus further my venture into the Personal Development field. Please send an email to me at: support@marlonpalmer.com

I am also looking for progressive like-minded people to create our own Mastermind Group, where we can share and engage in: new ideas, knowledge, encouragement, wealth strategies and companionship. This will be an elite group of people that come together on a monthly basis to find the answers to a better more productive & rewarding life.

· Are you happy with just having your head just above water??
· Working hard for money??
· Relationships: that you just put up with?

Then now is the time for change – forget those crappy New-Year’s resolution’s, which are usually forgotten by mid-February – make an inner decision for change and start attracting everything you ever wanted in life! (Well that’s what I am doing – why not join me, lets be a part of that elite group in society that are able to truly enjoy life and help others to break FREE from the rat race.)

December Activities at Kush

Hi blog, readers I hope all is well?

Just a quick note to let you know, that there will be no more screenings for 2010.

We would like to thank everyone that came out and supported us in 2010 – thank you very much!

We are changing things around for 2011 and will be seeking to take everything we do to a new higher level. We most likely will not be doing regular monthly screenings anymore and will focus quarterly screenings and developing existing partnership opportunities in TV & Film Distribution.

So don’t be surprised if you see me on TV one day soon.

We will also be launching a number of new sites including www.marlonpalmer.com which will focus on educating and nurturing people in personal development and wealth creation.

I am aiming to launch this new site in January 2011

I have written a new blog and it will be up shortly with more inside info on the UK film industry (rising stars, treachery, tips, courses etc)  and opportunities for black filmmakers.

Take care & we will engage soon.

Marlon Palmer

The “Lions Gate” Watch

Diary Of A Tired Black Film Promoter – Continued

T.perry_l

Greetings & Good Day My Friends, Supporters & Patrons.

I hope at this moment life for you feel’s good and your eyes are set firmly on your goals and objectives!

As some of you will know I have recently been venting my frustrations at Lions Gate Films (who are releasing the Tyler Perry films here in the UK) and the industry as a whole regarding the lack of opportunities and fair treatment for black led companies in the UK’s film industry.

Well, I can now inform you that after my initial consternation regarding Lions Gate Films the big CEO and Mr. Christopher Bailey (head of Theatrical) have heard my cry out and responded favourably to a direct letter sent to the CEO (if you want results you go to the top).

They also saw my complaints on the website and have made good and remunerated me for my submitted proposals and addressed the confusion I encountered when dealing with their marketing team.

And as the professional and fair people the management are, they have also granted Kush the permission to screen the Tyler Perry film “Madea’s Family Reunion” on Sunday 19th September (5.00 pm).

I would like to take this time to thank them very much!

In regards to supporting the Tyler Perry releases on DVD and at the cinema, as you already know we have waited a long time for these titles to be released here in the UK, finally they are here and I hope you all put your hands in your pockets and purses and financially support the UK release of these films. This will in return encourage Lions Gate Films UK to release all the other Tyler Perry films here in the UK, especially as they have already done so well on release in the US.

As they say: All’s well, that ends well!

The theatrical release of urban films in UK cinemas is decreasing and young ethnic-minorities are not growing up seeing positive images of themselves within the media industries; Kush through initiatives like the Film Boutique aims to support a push for change thus creating sustainable opportunities for minorities already established or those aspiring to develop careers in the UK media industries. Support on an on-going basis will be sought from Government Creative Industries Agencies, the Press & other Media along with local University Media Departments and of course the local community.

Kush would also like all to assist in putting out the call for well-produced new independent short & feature films that are available for screening!

The “Film Boutique” is an exclusive Film Club with a difference, where patrons will be some of the first to see new, classic & exclusive short & feature films from around the world on a bi-monthly basis with an emphasis on supporting local & international urban filmmakers. Patrons can also take out annual membership and enjoy great VIP treatment.

The Hackney Summer Uni – Needs Facilitators/Artiste/Organisations!

HYPU Summer Uni – 25 July – 12 August 2011

We are now starting to plan for the above programme, and would like to ask if you would be willing to support our charity by giving up your valuable time to run a course or workshops on a voluntary basis.

Funding for programmes and projects such as ours is becoming extremely difficult to obtain, over the past year and half, HYPU has had severe financial difficulties, which has resulted in us having to cancel many of the programmes that we hold. We are 100% reliant on fundraising as our only source of income as we are not supported by our local authority or any other government agency despite numerous requests for financial support. Due to the economic downturn many of the funders that support organisations like ours have been reluctant to give and for this reason resulted in us having to cancel many of our programmes. Our situation has become so severe that out of the four programmes we hold annually we have unfortunately only been able to hold one of our programmes during 2010.

As you are well aware The Summer University is a vital part of HYPU’s work, to our greater disappointment, for the first time in our 13 year history we were forced to cancel our 2010 summer programme, which is the biggest and most important of all the programmes we hold.  Hackney has a culture of gang violence and youth murders.  Police recorded 182 firearm offences between March 2009 and 2010, compared to 141 the year before – putting the borough among the worst in the capital for gun crime, however between all of this turmoil and disaffection, Hackney has some extremely talented young people.  – Who were extremely disappointed that there was no summer uni for them and no other alternative in the holiday provision for them to attend.

Therefore we have come to the conclusion that the only way that we can have a summer 2011 programme is to ask that our tutors, organisations, and partners run a workshop or course on a voluntary basis.  If you would like to run a session but are unable to give up 15hrs or 10hrs, a week we can be flexible as to how we timetable your course. e.g. two mornings or a one day workshop could be a possibility.

We recognise that this is a lot to ask and if you feel that you are unable to contribute your time we will fully understand.  We would be grateful if you could give us an indication if you would like to run a workshop or course for the summer no later than the 28 February 2011.

Yours sincerely

SAVE THE ACLT CHARITY – THE COMMUNITY MUST DO IT’S BIT!!

THE ACLT CHARITY IS IN CRISIS

It is with regret that we have to put up this post, but maybe at the same time this is a good wake up call for the London African-Caribbean community who in my opinion need to regain consciousness, stand-up on their own two feet and come together collectively to support a much-needed organisation like the ACLT – who has carried out some great work in our community. As of the beginning of 2011 they are no longer supported by local government funding due to cuts by the new so-called Con-dem government, and this has devastated their organisation.

Below is a message from the ACLT – THEY NEED YOUR  SUPPORT RIGHT NOW!

Thank you to our supporters and dedicated volunteers for their tremendous help and efforts with various fundraising activities over the last year. Like many of you, 2010 was an extremely tough year for us as funding dwindled dramatically despite the hard work to boost income in innovative ways.

Our income comes from small public donations and proactive or reactive fundraising. Therefore we are left in a vulnerable position when charity giving falls. Contrary to public opinion there is a sustained and significant lack of long term investment in our work to support patients and donor recruitment in minority ethnic communities. Ultimately, our closure will put many more lives in serious jeopardy. On their behalf, we must all rise to the challenge and galvanise everyone to take immediate action.

Save the ACLT Charity Appeal

SOS! After our crisis discussions, on 6 January 2011 we launched an urgent charity crisis appeal to raise £80K. We started by emailing all ACLT Volunteers and key media & entertainment contacts to come together and build a strategy. We are encouraged by your initial responses and efforts to kick-start the campaign. This is evolving rapidly as our ‘Crisis’ team develops various ideas and recommendations.

Fight for survival Many are shocked and dismayed at what could happen to patients and their families if the charity folded. Encouragingly, many have already pledged their commitment to stop our closure in March…and beyond.

A promising start. We would like to thank our volunteers and supporters who have donated funds and ideas and have helped spread the word. In the first week, you helped us raise over £7K – that’s about £1K a day! January is a difficult month and donations have slowed down, so we need each and every one of you to help as we have under 70 days left to reach the minimum £80K.

ACLT needs you!

Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, ACLT Co-Founders send an urgent plea to all ACLT supporters to take action for any financial assistance and support you can give.

5 steps to ‘Help Save the ACLT’

Our priority is to spread the word and raise as much as we can, as soon as we can.

* UK TAX PAYERS PLEASE REMEMBER TO GIFT AID YOUR DONATION *If 5,000 people gave £5 a month for 3 months = £75,000 + Gift Aid = £96,000!

WHEN YOU GIVE £1 – WE GET AN EXTRA 28p BACK FROM THE TAX MAN AT NO COST TO YOU!!

*Secure online donation at www.aclt.org

Bring Cash in person to office, Post a Cheque, or donate £3 by texting ACLT to 70300

Help us raise funds between now and March 2011.

The ACLT has limited resources, so please consider how you and/or others can lead, facilitate or deliver your ideas.

Together we can beat this challenge and we thank you deeply for all for your ongoing support and well wishes.

TIME 4 WORLD PEACE – A NEW WAY OF LIVING!

TIME 4 WORLD PEACE

A good friend of mine called Timothy John-Baptiste who is a teacher & mentor works with young people here in London he has come up with a great new concept after growing tired of all the trouble, violence, wickedness and selfishness in the world.

He has created, developed and instilled a planned worldwide monthly trigger action to get as many people as possible to respect 4 o’clock each day as “Time For World Peace”.

Everyone he has come into contact with especially young people has been instilled with his philosophy for world peace for at least 1 hour a day and how to make his trademark Peace sign using three fingers (a new way for some young people to make a positive hand-sign instead of negative gang-signs).

As a matter of fact Timothy has managed to get young people and adults alike to respect 4.00 pm daily as a time for thought & action regarding making Peace, regardless of if its with a family member, friend, enemy, lover, someone from a different nationalities, religious background etc – You know what I mean!

So why don’t you make a concerted effort to make PEACE with someone at 4.00 pm tomorrow or the day after or even the day after that – make an effort to make peace with someone – Please!

ITS TIME 4 WORLD PEACE!

Go checkout www.timeforworldpeace.com

Here’s a sample of his monthly newsletter below

I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break and remembering to make Peace in your world at 4 o’clock each day.

I must start this newsletter in remembrance of my father Alexander John-Baptiste who left us on Sunday 19th December 2011 at the age eighty-six. I was in the hospital with family members and witnessed him leave this world to rest in peace. My father was at peace with all in his world and loved his family and friends. He was respected by all around him and had a natural way of communicating with every person that he met.

God bless you my beloved dad, you will be remembered every day, especially at 4 o’clock. May your spirit rest in PEACE.

This picture was taken in October 2010 whilst he was in hospital. I’m so glad that I asked him to pose using our peace sign. I have this photo on my phone wallpaper on use it on my Facebook profile picture.

A discussion with the hospital registrar to collect his death certificate made me realise how many of us are not at peace with family members. Please make peace with your loved ones on 4th January 2011 at 4 o’clock. You can make a difference and create a peaceful start to the year before it’s too late.

T4WP Website: Feel free to visit the site and share with others what you have done to create peace in your world. Select Testimonials and go to – add a comment.

I still continue to make peace in my world and have been trying to contact a mentee who I worked with. Her number has changed so I will have to write a letter to enquire about her well-being.

Schools, Colleges and Universities

I continue to promote the 4 o’clock make peace message at a local secondary school and found this to be suitable to resolve conflict amongst the students. I also use the concept of making peace during internal exclusion classes, restorative justice sessions and with students involved in negative behaviour. I have been given the opportunity to expand T4WP further by adding key values to posters, which will be used within a new unit at the school.

Some students are interested in becoming ambassadors for their own countries and using Facebook as a means of promoting T4WP. We have students from Croatia, Iraq, Iran and many others countries based at the school that would like their world’s to be at peace.

Work in the community

I have managed to make contact with several organisations that wish to meet and discuss how T4WP can be used in the community. This includes church groups, British Transport Police and a manager for a national educational program.

A young lady I met through a personal development-training course has contacted me about raising the awareness of Love, Peace and Unity. She wishes to do this by sharing different rice dishes from around the world with families and communities. The team have agreed for this to take place on the 4th March 2011 to align with Time 4 World Peace. I will forward details in the near future to support this initiative.

Sharing T4WP

I shared T4WP with a taxi driver from Romania called Angel. Initially he was negative about how this would create peace with all the evildoers in the world. I said that these people would be gone in years to come and it was up to us to teach future generations to make peace in their worlds. I left him with a smile and asked that he remember T4WP at 4 o’clock.

Just before Christmas I met an eighty-two year man called Les in a queue at Tesco’s. Where we waited for over an hour to be served. When it was my turn to be served, I lifted his shopping basket from the floor and said that it was my pleasure for him to go first. Les was deeply appreciative and said that he lived his life doing good deeds for others and knew that I would be rewarded in the future. I didn’t mention T4WP but promised to mention him in my campaign newsletter.

 Testimonials and Messages

~ Peace cannot be achieved through violence; it can only be attained through understanding. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson …

~ True friendship makes us peace

~ It is coming, slowly but surely- all it takes is love and compassion- and maybe a note to some world leaders. We all have a voice and we WILL be heard!      Peace

~ I posted on my Facebook page something about what is Peace to me, in the same hope and inspiration that Tim has – that all we need to know is within us all, and sharing these things about ourselves is the first step in the process of that ultimate global win-win situation of Peace for humanity. Thank you Tim for your Stand, your Inspiration, your Time and Attention, your Passion, Communication, and Love for us all.

Thank you,  X

Precious gives Avatar a run for its screen average at UK box office

PreciousThe harrowing drama’s screen average of £5,552 was second only to James Cameron’s sci-fi epic, and more than double any other film in the top 10

The arthouse hit
A film about an obese teenager suffering harrowing abuse from both parents might not strike you as an easy sell at the box office, and that’s leaving aside any additional marketing challenge presented by an all-black cast. So the backers of Precious will be delighted with its £259,000 opening from 47 screens, generating a £5,552 screen average that is second only to Avatar’s and more than double any other film in the top 10.

The surprising part is where the film has performed best: six of its 10 top sites are Vues, Odeons and Cineworlds, indicating a more “urban mid-market” rather than arthouse audience. London’s Curzon Soho invariably the top cinema for an arthouse film was beaten by the Vue West End a stone’s throw away, and also by the Brixton Ritzy, which traditionally has a more racially mixed audience. Top site was the Vue Shepherds Bush, with £13,500.

The success in the multiplex chain sites will make it easier for Precious to expand, and it is seeking to add another 40 or so cinemas from Friday. Reviews in the broadsheets were mixed, but the film picked up four- and five-star reviews in mainstream titles such as Closer, Now and News of the World, and these endorsements are perhaps reflected in the film’s success in the plexes.

The success of this new entrant took some of the shine off arthouse rival A Prophet, which dipped 30%. That is a normally considered a decent hold, but the heat on Jacques Audiard’s prison-gang drama had fuelled hopes of a smaller drop. Anecdotally, audience members seem not to be appreciating A Prophet quite as much as the nation’s critics did. A best foreign language film Oscar nomination later today should help it reach audiences intimidated by its violence and two-and-a-half-hour running time.

The comeback
Mel Gibson hasn’t been seen on screens since 2003′s The Singing Detective, and hasn’t played a lead role since 2002′s Signs, so his return in conspiracy thriller Edge of Darkness presented a big test of his enduring appeal. An opening gross of £1.17m was almost identical to the debut of his last film in a similar genre, 1999′s Payback (£1.18m), although of course ticket-price inflation means that admissions on the new film are significantly lower. A more apt comparison might be State of Play, which like Edge of Darkness transposed a beloved UK TV series to a US setting. State of Play opened with £1.51m last April.

The phenomenon
With a tiny 6% dip from the previous weekend, Avatar reigns supreme once again, with seventh-weekend takings of £4.87m and a total to date of £65.07m, making it the fourth biggest hit of all time at the UK box office, behind Mamma Mia! (£69.17m), Titanic (£69.03m) and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (£66.10m).

Mamma Mia! Spent 13 weeks in the top five, but only two at No 1, whereas Titanic occupied the top spot in early 1998 for 13 weeks straight. So far, Avatar seems to be conforming to the Titanic model, with seven straight weeks in the top spot. Its £65m gross after seven weekends compares with just £44.6m for Titanic at the same stage of its run, suggesting that Avatar might still have plenty of gas in the tank, especially if it follows its predecessor and sweeps the Oscars.

The losers
After their weak debuts the previous weekend, steep falls were always on the cards for Ninja Assassin, Armored and The Boys Are Back. In the first place, they lost screens and show times; in the second, their distributors were unlikely to commit further marketing resources. Martial arts flick Ninja Assassin dropped 66%; heist picture Armored plunged an even heftier 80%; and Clive Owen indie drama The Boys Are Back suffered an ignominious slide of 82%.

The future
With only one new entrant in wide release (Edge of Darkness), overall box office was always bound to take a dip from the previous weekend, and it duly did by 13%. However, thanks overwhelmingly to Avatar, the market overall is 16% up on the equivalent frame from 2009, when Slumdog Millionaire retained its hold on No 1, and the top new release was Revolutionary Road. This weekend cinemas receive another boost with the expansion of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog from its current single London screen to nationwide saturation, where it will compete with rival animation Astro Boy. There’s also Clint Eastwood’s Nelson Mandela drama Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, and Youth in Revolt with Michael Cera. Unless Avatar suddenly suffers a significant dip, it should once again hold off these new pretenders and continue its reign at the top.

A history of Kenya from a Kenyan perspective with two rare films made in the 1970′s. They detail how the British initially appeared as traders in East Africa before moving on to massacre numerous ethnic groups including Somalis, and Masai. Resistance leaders were killed, imprisoned or disappeared and replaced with quislings. The best land was stolen and given to British immigrants such as Lord Delamere. Schools and rites of passage customs were destroyed or disrupted and replaced with mission schools which only a few could attend. The Land and Freedom army was formed by ex WW2 veterans but the British refused to use their name and invented a new name, The Mau Mau. With extensive archive footage and extended interviews with the African resistance movement these unique films have eerie parallels with the modern day ‘war on terror’ and put a context on recent political and racial problems in Kenya.

Small Island (Repeat) with Q and A with Producer - Sat 7 February
Small_island

By popular demand we will be repeating the film Small Island and having a interactive session with the producer Vicky Licorish to find out what it took, and what it was like to make this period drama set in the Caribbean and England.

When screened on the BBC it pulled in 5 million viewers beating Batman on ITV. Those who packed the first screening demanded another chance to see and discuss the film with friends and family as the atmosphere was so unique. Our repeat screening will take place on Saturday  7th February from 11.00am onward. We will reveal the venue in the next 10 days.  So check our site or add yourself to the mail list to be part of this special event.

FILMS FOR HAITI
Haiti

Two films in recognition of the heroic African freedom fighters who from 22 August 1791, inspired by Boukman Dutty, fought and beat the British, Spanish and French racists and abolished slavery in 1804. (these films were originally screened at the BFI in August 2009, we wil endeavour to repeat them soon)

Passion for a Country
This exploration of Haitian society of the late 19th and early 20th centuries focuses on the tormented life of one of Haiti’s most important authors and prominent political figures, Jacques Roumain. His perceptive writings, similar to Fanon and Cesaire, illuminated issues still relevant today.  If you misssed or saw “The Future is Elsewhere” (Les avenirs est Ailleurs)  you will really appreciate this film.

The Agronomist
Is about Jean Leopold Dominique who hosted Radio Haiti, the first independent radio station in Haiti. Director Jonathan Demme uses historical footage and interviews. The result is a serious recount of Haiti during its numerous regime changes. US military/political   interference and poverty-creation is exposed in detail.
